Intel have announced the release of its newest family of Xeon Processors, the E7 v2. These new CPU's feature the industry's largest memory support allowing it to analyse large data sets much more efficiently. Intel claim the new Processors deliver up to 80 percent more performance with an 80 percent lower total cost of ownership than alternative RISC architectures.

Triple Memory Capacity
The new processors have triple the memory capacity of the previous generation of processors meaning that companies can analyse data within the system memory rather than having to store in to disk first. This both reduces the time of analysis considerably and also the wear on other system components. Such is the benefit, leading industry analysts Gartner expects 35 percent of mid to large sized companies will change to in memory analytics by 2015.

eBay has arguable the largest online marketplace in the world with millions of individual item listings every day. It's data handling is in excess of 50 petabytes across more than 100 million users. Initial testing results of the new Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 in conjunction with SAP's HANA in-memory analytics software has seen a performance increase and helped eBay gain a better understanding of larger data sets that it believes will help drive additional revenue opportunities for its customers.

These processors are a significant step up from previous generations with some of the key points being.
  • Built for up to 32-socket servers
  • Supports up to 15 processing cores
  • Supports up to 1.5 terabytes (TB) of memory per socket
  • Intel Integrated I/O, Intel Data Direct I/O and support for PCIe 3.0
  • Achieves up to four times the I/O bandwidth of previous generations
  • 80 percent lower total cost of ownership
Commenting on the new CPU's Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group said "Organizations that leverage data to accelerate business insights will have a tremendous edge in this economy. The advanced performance, memory capacity and reliability of the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family enable IT organizations to deliver real-time analysis of large data sets to spot and capitalize on trends, create new services and deliver business efficiency."

System Builds
Intel has said that there are currently 21 system manufacturers that will be rolling out new server builds that incorporate the new technology, these are, in alphabetical order, Asus, Bull, Cisco, Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, HP, Huawei, IBM, Inspur, Lenovo, NEC, Oracle, PowerLeader, Quanta, SGI, Sugon, Supermicro, Unisys and ZTE.

Compatible Software
There are also sixteen companies producing analytics software compatible with the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family, these include Altibase, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Pivotal, QlikView, Red Hat, SAP, SAS, Software AG, Splunk, Sungard, Teradata, TongTech, Vertica and YonYou.

Intel are an American multinational Design and Manufacturing company founded in 1968 and are currently the largest semiconductor chip manufacturer. They are most well known for their ranges of Desktop PC Processors and also Mobile and Server Processors although they also produce Solid State Drives and Motherboards for the retail sector.
