AMD Back To School Survey Results

14th July 2014
AMD recently conducted a Back-to-School survey with some of the results making interesting reading. The survey, conducted by Harris Poll in the US and aimed at College students aged between 18 and 26 reveals the laptop to be the most essential piece of equipment, ahead of smartphones and tablets.

We always take surveys with a pinch of salt, especially those being financed by companies that have a vested interest in the habits of the participants, however it does show how far things have changed in the last 10 years.

Major Points
Listed below are some of the more interesting points AMD released about this survey:
  • 85 percent of students own a laptop.
  • Over 50 percent have more than one device with them at all times.
  • Asked about their most important possession only 1% said their TV.
  • 41 percent said their laptop was their most important possession.
  • 27 percent of students said a new computer would be their first purchase if they won $1000.
  • 67 percent say one of their biggest fears is if their technology stopped working.
  • 25 percent would choose a computer over a family member or beer if they were stranded on a deserted island.
We liked that last one and it made us laugh, but really, what use is a computer on a desert island with no power...?

That being said we've met people we would consider less use than the computer.

AMD
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) are a Processor Design and Manufacturing company, they are most well known for their ranges of Desktop PC Processors but also supply Mobile and Server Processors. The latter being primarily for cloud computing and virtualization environments. AMD devices are used everywhere from the smallest PC to state of the art Super Computers. Their purchase of ATI in 2006 has led to AMD developing CPU's that not only do normal processing functions but also graphics processing functions within a single chip.
