City and Islington College Replaces Cisco With Dell Networking

22nd January 2014
Dell have announced that they have deployed Dell Networking solutions to replace the existing Cisco Core Networking at London's City and Islington College.

New Digital Age
As teaching techniques move more into a new digital age it has become more important that the IT equipment servicing this is kept up to date. City and Islington College, London, after undertaking a review of their current standing and planned future projects decided that a complete change of IT infrastructure would be required.

VoIP expansion
The College felt that its current Cisco switches would not cope when they change over to VoIP communications so opted to replace these with 10 Dell Networking S4810 core switches spread across the colleges five sites.

Minimal Downtime
The changes were implemented as a joint operation between the existing IT department and Dell's Services team and resulted in minimal downtime for the 12,000 students and 1,000 staff.

Mark Jenkins, Head of ICT Services at City and Islington College commented on the changes, “We intend to move to Voice over IP and unified communications in the future and to prepare for this, we really needed to improve our network infrastructure. With this in mind, we chose to completely replace our incumbent Cisco core, distribution and access switches with a Dell collapsed core solution. The Dell solution was chosen due to its high performance following a competitive procurement exercise using the Janet ‘Routers and Switches’ framework.”

Dell Inc, formerly Dell Computers is an American Computer Company based in Texas (USA). Dell produce Home and Business Computers, Servers, Ultrabooks and Laptops to name but a few and are one of the largest computing companies in the world today.
