Intel at the Mobile World Congress 2014 have announced their latest 64 bit Atom Processors for use in the latest Android smartphones and tablets. The pair which are expected to be in production as early as April this year are significant improvements on Intel's earlier models.

The "Merrifield" processor, a 2.13GHz Intel Atom processor Z3480 is expected to be the first to be used by major smartphone and tablet manufacturers. In tests the 64 bit ready SoC delivers best in class for compute performance and battery life for the mainstream and performance sectors. On compute intensive applications it outperforms its competition, a true sign that Intel are catching up fast in a market they were extremely slow to enter.

The Processor is based on Intel's 22nm Silvermont microarchitecture and features a PowerVR Series 6 Graphics IP core from Imagination Technologies and Intel's Integrated Sensor Solution which more effectively manages sensor data used by Apps. The processor is designed to be paired with the Intel XMM 7160 LTE platform meaning devices produced using this technology can be up to 4G capable.

The second on Intel's two releases is the "Moorefield" processor which is Intel's next-generation 64-bit Intel Atom processor and builds on the solid advancements of the Merrifield. This CPU will benefit from two additional Intel architecture (IA) cores for up to 2.3GHz of compute performance and will hold a more advanced GPU than the Merrifield with the ability to utilize faster memory. The Moorefield processor is designed for use with Intel's 2014 LTE platform, the Intel XMM 7260 which Intel also announced the launch of.

Commenting on the new 64 bit processor releases Intel Corporation President Renee James said "Sixty-four bit computing is moving from the desktop to the mobile device. Intel knows 64-bit computing, and we're the only company currently shipping 64-bit processors supporting multiple operating systems today, and capable of supporting 64-bit Android when it is available."

Intel are an American multinational Design and Manufacturing company founded in 1968 and are currently the largest semiconductor chip manufacturer. They are most well known for their ranges of Desktop PC Processors and also Mobile and Server Processors although they also produce Solid State Drives and Motherboards for the retail sector.
