Samsung Smart Home to Debut at CES 2014

6th January 2014
We have been wondering when someone will introduce a mainstream system that allows users to control all of their devices and have presets for their home in one easy to use package. Currently you either have to pay an arm and a leg to get a bespoke system installed in your home or download endless apps to your favourite flavour of smartphone to control things individually.

That all seems about to change, as Samsung has announced it will be unveiling its new Smart Home at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014 in Las Vegas. Samsung expect this service to be rolled our across its own devices in the first half of 2014 but the most eye catching comment from Samsung is

"Samsung will also collaborate with third-party partners to make the Smart Home service extendible to their products and services, building the foundation for a rapidly-growing ecosystem of connected home services."

This could in essence means Samsung will be allowing other manufacturers to integrate their devices alongside Samsung's to be controlled as one by Samsung Smart Home.

The First Three
Once released Samsung Smart Home will initially only provide three services enabling users to connect with their devices from anywhere and at anytime. The big three are:
  • Device Control
  • Home View
  • Smart Customer Service
These and other options will evolve through 2014 and beyond.

Voice Commands
The Smart Home will also have a voice command function that will allow a set of presets to be used at a given command. If the user says "Going Out" the system can be set to turn off lights and appliances automatically. Similarly if the user says “Goodnight” to their Smart TV remote control, the TV will be turned off and lights dimmed and gradually turned off.

Device Control
Users can set and use fully customised settings on their Smart TV or Mobile Devices to monitor home devices such as appliances, lights, air conditioning and turn them on or off from anywhere in the world via a Smart Home App on their mobile devices.

Home View
With the Home View feature, a user can use their smartphone to get real-time views of their home via in-built cameras inside their appliances. They can also use Smart Customer Service to send notifications when it is time to have appliances serviced or replace consumables.

Andy Griffiths, President Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland said: “With Samsung Smart Home, we are bringing our capabilities as the world’s number-one manufacturer of smart devices to make the connected home a reality for consumers today.”
